How do you install a custom bifold door?

At Panoramic, we have many years of experience in installing a custom made bifold door. Turning your door into a bifold door is a useful way of maximising every inch of space you can find. It is attractive because it opens up your home, which is a great way to connect an office to your kitchen, for instance. In this article, we will help you create your very own bifold door so you are able to bring out the space in your home. At Panoramic, we understand that creating the door is difficult, so we are on hand to help you if you get stuck.

It is crucial to think about what size of door you will fit, alongside the width and the height. Use the widest measurement to see where the door will fit. Once you’ve done this, measure the height at two points, vertically on both the left and the right. The longest length is the height that you will need. It is important to understand that bifold doors can’t be trimmed to fit the opening frame, so you will have to make sure the door is the correct size.

do bifold doors need planning permission

To create the bifold door, you’ll need a tape measure, a pencil, a drill with both 2mm and 5mm bits, a mallet, the bifold doors and their trackers, a screwdriver, door knob, and safety goggles. The top track of the door will have to be removed from its packaging with a screw driver. Now you are ready to install your door!

When starting the door installation, the top track of the door needs to be positioned 19mm back from the edge of the door frame. Mark this position with a pencil on the left and right side of the doorframe to get an accurate fit. If, for example, you want the door opening from the right hand side, the track and the track’s pivot hole will both be on the right. Next, position the track behind the marked line, making sure it is level with the door frame.

After this, mark the position on the doorframe by using the screwholes, then remove the drill holes with a 2mm wood drill. It’s essential to wear safety goggles to shield your eyes in case falling wood and dust get into them. Next, using the screws provided, screw the tracks into position, so they are safe and secure. Once you’ve done this, measure the bottom pivot bracket position down the frame of the hanging side, and after you have done this, measure and mark 19mm from the inside edge of the frame of the marked line. This will indicate where the door will open so that it would be on the bottom right hand position of the door.

When the bottom bracket is level with the top bracket, fitting the bifold door should be straightforward. You can even apply sealant to the joints and the jambs, which will prevent draughts and mould spots from appearing. When putting the bifold door in, get a second person in to help you because it will make the job easier and ensures everything is aligned correctly. The head and sill must be parallel, while the jambs should be vertical.

The frames are held into place with packers and drill holes, placing them where the holes are. Work on them gently till the frame is attached without distorting the materials. Next, fix the door and head tightly until the lintel touches the head. To do this, work outwards and tighten bit by bit, ensuring a consistent and easy manoeuvre. Also, if you make the corrections now, this will prevent any issues from arising later.

Attach the hinges to the bottom part of the panel, then install the carrier hinges and pivot through the holes that secure the doors to the end of the track. You’ll need to do this in the correct order, so use the door’s instruction manual to help you out. Then, attach the carrier hinges and pivots to leave enough room for the door to open once they have been hung.

To hang the doors, you will need to put the hinges and the frame together. Straighten the hinges within the frame, and attach them to the rollers.  They should fit and move easily once fitted.

The last thing you should do is apply sealant to the door, which will keep it sealed properly and weatherproof, protecting it from tough conditions. Finally, once you have installed the door, you will need to have a door handle to complete the installation. We offer lots of handles that you can choose from that will complement your door. This will give you free rein and a personalised look to finish.
